What We Love: Summer 2017

July 31, 2017

This romper has been one of my main go-to outfits so far this summer. I tried it on on a whim thinking that it wasn't quite my style, but ended up loving it. It feels like a dress, fits nicely in all the right areas -- I especially like how snug it is in the torso -- and is not so short that it reveals too much when you bend over. Plus, it is a romper that my husband actually likes.

I honestly couldn't tell you where I first hear this song, but I absolutely love it and think that it is a perfect song for summer. It's got a sweet beat that you have no problem dancing to. In fact, as soon as the song comes on, my body starts to move involuntarily.

I have always loved the water. I lived in the next door neighbour's pool while growing up, and enjoy taking my son to our local outdoor pool -- and the lake -- every summer. It wouldn't feel like summer if you didn't spend a little bit of time in an outdoor pool. This art print from Helo Birdie take me back to my summers at the pool every time I look at it -- it also makes me wish I was on a tropical vacation!

What We Love: Spring 2017

May 07, 2017

I may have just snapped up a pair of these Birkenstocks recently in hopes that they will become a new favourite sandal -- especially with a serious walking holiday coming up this summer. What I didn't know, until I went to purchase the sandals, is that Birkenstock sandals can be rebuilt, making them a solid investment that will last a lifetime. Given my promise to myself to become more ethically and environmentally responsible (see here and here) when it comes to clothing, Birkenstocks seem to be a step in the right direction -- pun intended.

That voice. It's what drew my in to this song when I heard it on the radio recently. It's so strong and powerful.

I am in love with this beautiful Big Dipper and Little Dipper constellation set from Sargasso Shop. With thoughts of summer, it makes me think about fun times camping with my family, and it also makes me think about my son -- mama bear and baby bear.

What We Love: Winter 2017

February 24, 2017

This sweater from Rebecca King Fashion is a staple in our wardrobe this winter. It is perfect for wearing underneath your wool duffle coat this winter -- the neck acts as a scarf, and the bottom keeps your legs warm. It also transfers nicely to your Spring/Fall wardrobes as a cozy sweater. We love the work of Rebecca King -- see previous purchase here -- and are already plotting which sweaters to buy next.

This song from The Overcoats has been playing on the radio a lot lately. We love the vibe of the music, and the harmonies of the voices singing. Beautiful.

We are in love with brooches and handmade pins. This cute little pigeon pin from Jolly Awesome Art caught our eye recently. The shop is currently on a little break, but be sure that we're going to snap it up when it opens again.

My son has really gotten into music recently. We heard this song on the radio and he requested that I add it to his playlist on Rdio. I also added it to my playlist. It is such a chill song.

Look

This is such a beautiful and delicate photograph that speaks for itself. Alert animals in a winter scene...breath-taking.

Love

I absolutely love this idea. I thought it was so much fun, and such a clever play on the well known Le Chat Noir poster. I must get one!

Don't get me started on this song. I heard only a little bit of it while driving one day, and as soon as I reached my destination I Googled it to figure out what it was called. I loved it instantly, and I hope you do too!

Look

This photo gets me in the mood for Christmas festivities. It is now less than one month until the big day is here, and each year I get more and more excited as my son starts to understand, and enjoy, the day even more. I love the quiet, the lights, and the love that surround Christmas. It is such a warm feeling that envelopes you, and that is exactly how this photograph makes me feel.

Love

I  am in love with this vest from Utanum -- a lable from Iceland. It looks so cozy, and would be perfect for curling up with a cup of tea.

I discovered Papaoutai by Stromae during a regular old exploring of YouTube moment, and I loved it almost instantly. Since then I have had it on repeat on my Rdio while driving in the car, and while I am working on the computer. The video is a little on the bizarre side when you first watch it, but I love the dancing and the message behind the whole thing. It's a very clever idea. While I have no idea what is being said it is still such a wonderful song, and I love the emotion in it.

Look

I was really excited when I saw this image of Picasso and his little dog Lump -- I love that name -- because it immediately reminded me of my own dog and the little image that I drew of him -- and became my shop logo. Not that I'm comparing my work to Picasso -- maybe I am -- but I thought it was interesting that we both drew simple drawings of our little dogs.

Love

This dress from the F/W 2014 Ralph Lauren Collection is to die for. What a stunning piece of art and design. I would never have anywhere to wear this dress, but I would totally buy it and just walk around my house in it.

I stumbled upon Milky Chance when looking through music with my son and trying to find songs that were appropriate for his ears -- besides Frozen and The Chipmunks. I clicked upon Milky Chance's album Sadnecessary and discovered Stolen Dance, and I've been hooked ever since. I can't get over the beat.

Look

She is pure beauty.

Love

I love the look of this room. It's a beautiful colour with amazing finds hanging from the wall, and I love that little desk. Such inspiration!

I could not find the source. If you know it, please share.

You would not believe how excited I was to find out that the Madden brothers are back at it. I was a fan of Good Charlotte back in my high school days, and I was wondering where they were at. I heard this song on the radio last weekend, and instantly loved it. It's got a 1960's and 70's vibe to it, and reminds me of something from The Mamas & The Papas or Aquarius (Let the Sunshine In).

Look

I have been looking for hairstyles to wear with a simple yet elegant dress that I chose for a wedding this weekend. The collar of the dress tells me that I should have my hair up, but I want something that is really understated. I'm liking the look of this hairstyle. It's exactly what I've been picturing in my head.

Love

I just recently purchased this map of the world for my son's bedroom. I really, really love this map because UP was one of the very first Disney movies that we showed him, and this is one of my favourite quotes from the movie. I hope he will grow up believing this.

A friend at work shared this beautiful rendition of a Robyn song with me. Upon hearing it I vaguely remembered hearing it before, but knew that it was a faster song than the cover that I was currently listening to. I like when people take a song and make it their own, which is exactly what Lucy Wainwright Roche did, and sometimes you like it even more than the original.

Look

I really enjoyed looking through this selection of literary graffiti from around the world. Some of them I have read, while others are familiar because they are popular quotations, and some of them I have never heard of before, but I know who the author is and have read some of their other work -- or at least bits of it in order to pass a class in university. This quotation from this Emily Dickinson poem was my favourite.

Love

It's getting time for me to start looking at a new watch, and I really love this beautiful watch from Olivia Burton. All of her watches are so simple and absolutely stunning. I may need one of these in my life very soon.

p.s. Have you signed up for our monthly newsletter yet? There's going to be a big announcement in the first one. Don't miss out!

I am probably late to get on the Metric train, but I guess you could say that it's never too late to hop on any music train. I heard "Clone" while on the drive home from work. It was later in the day -- ironically among the lyrics in the song -- and the radio segment that I often listen to on the drive home was over for the day, luckily they had another segment full of great songs that I had never heard before and this was one of them. It was a perfect song for the drive.

Look

I really like the look of a strapless one-piece swimsuit and a floppy, broad-brimmed hat. It is so classy in so many ways.

Love

I love the dreamy quality of this outdoor space: the white doors and windows, the giant pots of flowers, the little sofa. It is everything that I wish our space will feel like when we are finally done with it.

I've been listening to CBC Radio 2 a lot more during the drive to and from work. I've grown tired of all the music that plays on the popular music stations, and I learned that CBC Radio 2 still plays the people that you've heard of, but they play songs that are not the singles they released for the other radio stations. CBC Radio 2 also plays a lot of Canadian bands and musicians and I am so glad that I am able to hear artists that don't typically get radio play. The song "I'm Not Your Hero" from Tegan & Sara is one that caught my attention this month. I love everything about it.

Look

While looking at these shells I am reminded of the time that I had celebrating my birthday in Hawaii last year, and the seashells that I discovered in the beaches of the North Shore and the South Shore -- which I still must share with you.

Love

I am really enjoying the outdoors right now: the heat, the dinners on the deck, playing at the park. I love the idea of intimate spaces to enjoy the outdoors right in your own backyard. It's quite hard to achieve this in areas that are relatively new and have a lot of growing to do, but I want to get everything done now so our yard can grow around it all. I have so many dreams for our backyard, and a patio with a pergola is one of them.

Listen:

In our younger years my husband got me hooked on rave music. I've always loved the beats that come with that style of music, and I've recently been listening to it again. "My Feelings for You" from Avicii and Sebastian Drums has been a favourite lately.

Look:

Someone I follow on Pinterest pinned this photograph in the last little while -- Senator Hotel, Atlantic City, 1948, by photographer Nina Leen. I was immediately drawn to it. I love that it was in the late 1940's and the women were showing so much skin. Fashion hasn't changed much, and now we know that our grandparents were a little more risque than they'd like for us to think.

Love:

I really love the idea of these little gardens from That Artist Woman. This week I made one with the children at work -- as our current theme is gardens -- although ours isn't quite as pretty. I do hope to add some more flowers to it as we enter gardening season.

Listen:

As soon as this song came on the radio for the first time, I pumped up the volume. It is such a catchy and up-beat song -- which seems to be a trend in my Listen, Look, Love posts. I know that a song is good if it immediately gets my shoulders boppin'.

Look:

This is one oft he first pins that I ever pinned to my Fascination board on Pinterest. That specific board is filled with all of the images that catch my eye or pique my interest. This specific image reminded me of the book Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, and I love looking at it.

Love:

I absolutely love this recipe for chicken nuggets from Six Sisters' Stuff. It is a go too recipe for when I want something simple and fun for supper, and it is sooo delicious -- I usually add a lot more of the spices than it says in the recipe because we like it with a little kick.

My husband just linked me to his Rdio account -- which I loooove -- and I've been having a lot of fun looking through all of the music that they have available. I had listened to Childish Gambino before after seeing an interview with him on George Stroumboulopoulos -- check out Freaks and Geeks -- but this song has really sucked me in. Just a warning, his work is explicit.

Look

Eerie. Stunning. Beautiful. So many words can describe this enchanting photo and I can't make myself look away. I am drawn towards the eyes...

Love

I recently bought this sweater from Boden, and I absolutely love it. It is so warm and cozy, and just the pop of colour I need to start putting into my wardrobe -- I have too many navy shirts.

Listen, Look, Love: January

January 27, 2014
Listen

My husband and I enjoy listening to music from Rdio while we are in the car. We have had a love affair with the music from The Great Gatsby since last summer, and I have recently started listening to this song again. It's such a fun song to dance to, and I love Q-Tip.

Look

Greta Hodgkinson was the first ballerina that I ever saw perform Odette/Odile in Swan Lake. She was absolutely breath-taking, and started my love affair with ballet -- specifically Swan Lake. Since I first saw this photograph of her preparing for her performance as the Sugarplum Fairy in The Nutcracker, I haven't been able to take my eyes away from it. She is simply beautiful.

Love

This amazing dress from  Cushnie Et Ochs Spring 2014 collection is to die for...and so is the price. What a beautiful collection.
