Mexico 2019: The Excursions

March 17, 2019

Earlier this year, my friend and I took a trip to Los Cabos. While we were there, we did two excursions. The first one took us on a tour of San Jose del Cabo where we explored shops in the art district and learned about pearls that are found in the Sea of Cortez, and Cabo San Lucas where we had the most delicious lunch at a spot called Stop Light, explored a small area of shopping, watched glass blowers at work, and went on a water tour of the Sea of Cortez and saw the iconic Lovers Rock and a ton of Sea Lions.

The second excursion was a snorkeling trip that took us to a remote and quiet spot in the Sea of Cortez to explore fish and coral in the area. After we were done snorkeling, we were able to use paddle boards and kayaks. We were even lucky enough to see some Humpback Whales pop up before diving down to look for food.

Mexico 2019: On the Resort

February 10, 2019

Back at the beginning of January, I took my first trip to Mexico. A friend and I stayed at RIU Santa Fe in Los Cabos and absolutely loved our time there. We lived by the pool, or on the beach, and just soaked up the sun while enjoying free drinks and delicious food (my favourite is the pico de gallo and nachos).

When we weren't at the resort, we were out exploring Los Cabos either snorkeling and getting a tour of the Sea of Cortes, or in one of the cities (Cabo San Lucas or San Jose del Cabo). As you may recall from my trip to Hawaii a few years ago, I fell in love with the ocean and everything it taught me. I was cautious of the water in Cabo as it reminded me a lot of a place we swam in in Hawaii. We enjoyed letting it wash up onto our feet, but the pull of the water could be quite intense and tried to pull us along with it a few times.

I love laying on the sand listening to the waves as much as I love being in the water, and wandering up and down the beach in search of seashells was an excellent workout. The beach is a peaceful place for me. What is your peaceful place?

All About Food: The Valuable Lesson I Learned From My Visit To Cuba

August 07, 2017

When it came to what we were going to eat in Cuba, I didn't know what to expect -- see my vacation here. The reviews of our resort were mixed between saying that the food was bland, or that there was nothing wrong with it at all. I knew that we wouldn't be getting French cuisine while we were there, and I'm not much of a sauce person so bland food doesn't bother me anyway.

What I discovered while we were there was a buffet full of fresh fruits, meats, and some vegetables. I am assuming that over time the resorts have figured out the kind of expectations that we have when it comes to food, and have tried their best to provide us all with food that it similar to what we eat at home as there were definitely foods that were imported -- like the jams and jellies that I liked to put on my crepe-like pancake as there was no syrup.

But this is beside the point. The food that I ate in Cuba was fresh and -- mostly -- local, and I lived my days eating foods that I wouldn't normally be eating at home. I ate very little meat and focused more on the fruits and salads, breads and rice that were available to me -- because there was no junk food for me to gobble up, except for colas.

What I didn't notice then, that I figured out once I was back in Canada, was that my body was detoxing from all the foods back at home, and, as soon as I started back into my old habits at home, I got sick.

While I was laying at home sick on the sofa, I watched a couple of documentaries on Netflix -- I loooove documentaries on Netflix. One of them was a show about food and the effects that it has on our body called Hungry for Change

As I was laying there exhausted from the illness that I had developed from the food that I had eaten when I came home, and realised that I had been exposed to such fresh food -- and nothing else -- while I was away, I knew that I had to go back to what I was eating like in Cuba.

I'm not going to lie to you, I still eat chips, drink pop, and go out for supper to places that we really shouldn't be going, but my main focus is on vegetables and fruits. I eat salads and fresh cut veggies every day, and I eat fruit and nuts on my porridge instead of brown sugar. I have made little adjustments here and there in my diet that have made a huuuuuge difference to my body that I would have never figured out had I not gone to Cuba.

Most of you that have been following along for a while know that I have been going through a weight loss period for about five years now -- read the history here. While I haven't done a "Weight Update" in quite a while, you can consider this my newest one.

Around this time last year I decided I wanted to lose a couple more pounds -- the last of my weight loss goal -- and I did it by counting calories, etc. It was difficult, and took me a long time to achieve my goal. Some days I felt like I was practically starving myself, but I never felt good, healthy. My asthma became a serious issue again during my pregnancy seven years ago, and I was still relying on my steroid inhaler a lot -- which is something I don't like to do.

Since I began making vegetables and fruits my main focus, I am so proud to be able to tell you that I have not used my inhalers -- steroid or Ventolin -- once since my visit to Cuba back in January. I do not remember the last time that I became seriously ill, and as soon as I feel myself becoming sick, I do a mental check and realise that I have been eating really junky and get back on track again and the sickness goes away. I have lost the last couple of pounds for good, and even a couple more that I was surprised about.

It's so hard to explain, and not sound super preachy about it. Just know that I learned a valuable lesson that I know has done my body good.

Cuba 2017: Sancti Spiritus & Trinidad

February 05, 2017

While we were in Cuba, my friend and I took an excursion from Cayo Santa Maria to Trinidad via Sancti Spiritus -- which was a short stop to get a sangria and explore the streets and churches. Our first stop in Trinidad was a lovely pottery house called Casa Chichi. We were able to watch the items being made, and explore the shop -- which was open-air and so wonderful to be in. I picked out a cute, green teapot to take home with me.

After lunch, where we were serenaded by a local band, we were taken on a tour of some of the main roads in Trinidad, and then we were told to go shop and explore and meet back at La Canchancara -- where we could get some canchanchara served in small glasses that were made by Casa Chichi.

We visited two different markets, and found a few art galleries to explore. The art in Trinidad was amazing. It seemed like such a creative city where, again, the Cuban people were so warm and welcoming. I also found some beautiful leather sandals that I can't wait to wear this summer. Trinidad is definitely worth a visit while in Cuba.

Cuba 2017: Hotel Cayo Santa Maria

January 29, 2017

It's been almost two weeks since I left for Cuba with my friend for a "Girls Week Off" vacation, and not a day goes by that I don't think about my time there -- or about going back. It was a beautiful country, and, though we spent most of our time at the resort, I highly recommend you visit. My friend and I stayed at Hotel Cayo Santa Maria, and we couldn't have been happier with our experience. The people were so friendly -- not a single person passed you without saying "hola" -- and did everything they could to make our stay enjoyable. Nothing gets much better than a coconut with rum in it, and a fresh cooked pizza from a fire oven. I plan on taking my family back there next time!

Hawaii and Back

October 23, 2013

Do you know how hard it is to share an entire vacation in 10 photographs? I could share so many more with you, but I know that it would become a bit much and you don't really want to see all of the different bathing suits that I brought with me anyway.

We had an amazing time in Hawaii. During the trip we were already talking about what we were going to do the next time that we were there, or how we would do things when we brought our son with us. Hawaii had us hooked. I do wish that we had explored the North Shore a lot more, but that is a lesson learned for next time. It was such a vastly different experience from the city.

What I enjoyed most about the trip was waking up, putting on our suits and sunscreen -- you gotta live in that stuff -- and heading to the beach. I learned so much from the ocean in the short time that I was there, and I can still feel the energy of the waves as I lay in bed paying attention to my breathing. I love it!
