2/52

This week Little Boy bought himself some blue glitter glue, dinosaur and robot stickers, and this pink heart balloon at the dollar store. He has loved balloons for as long as I can remember, and this week he has begun having conversations and treating his balloon like it is a person. He was even disappointed that it wasn't talking to him one day. Precious moments.

What I Wore: LUGO 2015

As you know, I always have a fun time experiencing LUGO, and, for me and many others, part of that experience is expressing yourself through fashion. This year's theme was Lugo Gold, so I decided to go wimple with a statement necklace. I wore a cute top that I had picked up on vacation from FCUK, some leggings from Jacqueline de Yong, black booties from Call it Spring, and a gold necklace that is so old I can't remember where it came from -- probably Forever 21.

I decided to go with the leggings because, honestly, I didn't want to shave my legs, and I went with a tank top so that I would stay a little cooler while dancing -- LUGO tends to get a bit warm with all of the people that are there. I chose the necklace because, well, it's gooooold, and I wore the booties because I wanted to elongate my legs without having to wear sky-high pumps. My feet were still exhausted by the end of the night. How do people wear shoes like that all day long?

Read It: #GIRLBOSS

I tend to be quite resistant towards trends. I am either ahead of my time by doing something before many other people do and then getting embarrassed and stopping, or running at the back of the pack and latching on at the last minute before the trend peters out. Right now everyone is wearing patterned leggins, and it took me a while to a) finally realise how much fun it is to wear patterns on your bottom half and b) to be comfortable with myself in patterned leggins. As for trends in art and design, I will always resist because I will do what comes natural to me and what inspires me for my shop.

But when it comes to books, I don't usually want to pick up a book that has sold a billion copies in the first week because, to me, it says that it will not be a book that I am going to enjoy -- I am quite particular in my selections and steer towards the less popular books. So when #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso started showing up all over the internet on blogs and Instagram, I was resistant. That was until I saw it at the book store and though I'd see what all of the fuss was about. I opened to a random page and started reading, and lets just say that I wanted to buy it then and there.

I have never been sucked into a book as quickly as I was by #GIRLBOSS -- usually I have to read a couple of chapters before I know that a book has really got me hooked. It took me less than a week to get through the book, and I really want to read it again. So what got me so lost in this book?

1. Sophia Amoruso's style of writing me me feel like I was her friend and we were just sitting down together to chat. I have never read a book that felt so simple and engaging. I could not believe that this is her first book because she is such a good story-teller. I know that there are many people involved in writing a book that helped her, but you don't normally have good writing within your first book. It takes a while to find your style and your voice -- your writing evolves -- but I feel like Amoruso nailed it on her first try.

2. She bares it all. I'm sure that there are some secrets that Amoruso did not feel like she needed to share with us, and that's perfectly fine. Except that it feels like she shared every little secret and every little detail that were on the road to her success -- her continued success. She is willing to say that although it seems like she got it right to get on the fast track with her business, it didn't actually happen over night. There were a lot of moments where she stumbled and struggled to put the blocks in place for something she never knew was going to happen. There was a lot of life preparation to make her the strong woman she is today.

3. I didn't feel like I needed to own a business in order to enjoy, or gain new knowledge from, this book. Yes, there is a lot of information in this book that would help any business owner, professional, or sales associate -- people have to start somewhere. She talks about money, responsibility and creativity -- among many other things -- and her philosophies really resonated with me. Even if I wasn't a business owner I think I still would have felt the same way, because, as I was reading this book I wasn't reading it as a business self-help book, I was reading it from one woman to another speaking from the heart.

1/52

I saw a couple of wonderful blog posts on the blog of Jennifer Trovato about taking a portrait of her son every week for a year. I thought it would be a fun idea to see the changes in my son over the course of a year, and have decided to do my own 52 weeks of portraits of my son. It took quite a few photos to try to get him to stop doing the "cheese" face. I even had him tell me a story, but he didn't look at the camera while talking. We'll see how this develops over the coming weeks.

Lugo Gold: LUGO 2015

What an amazing experience LUGO was this year -- 2014 and 2013. When we arrived we received numbers on golden stickers that we were to stick to ourselves, but what we didn't know is that there was a station where people could write anonymous letters to each other using a typewriter, stickers, or a pen, and seal them in an envelope for another person to come along and deliver to the person wearing the number that corresponded to the number on the envelope. I thought it was a fun adventure, and a great way to get people to socialise with each other in a way that they would not have throughout the evening. My friends and I spent a lot of the time asking people "What's your number?" and then delving into a conversation about the envelopes, and creating some in the moment relationships that lasted throughout the night.

As always, there was great food -- I ate the churros from Duck Duck Goose and the pulled brisket taco from Congress Beerhouse -- and amazing performances of music, spoken word, art and dance -- we saw the most fantastic drag queens Kiki Roquette & Puffy Von Pop N Fresh, and listened to a group that, sadly I do not know the name of, but had a really fun mixture of sweet beats and guitar riffs.

It was a fantastic night of glitter cannons, golden glitter face embellishments, laughter, dance and art. This Lugo really lived up to it's title: Lugo Gold.

Please sign up for the swap by Friday January 16, 2015. You will be paired up, and have your partner's information sent to you by Friday January 23, 2015. Please have your Valentine in the mail no later than Friday January 30, 2015 -- remember that some of the cards will be going overseas, so you want to make sure that it is sent out in enough time to reach your Valentine.

Shop Update: Valentine's Day 2015

I am so excited to share with you the  five new Valentines that I have created this year -- one of which is another card from the shop that has been altered a little bit, and will only be available during the time leading up to Valentine's Day. This year's Valentines were inspired by work that is already available in the shop, as well as something that a co-worker said, and a new attempt at a card that I tried designing last year -- it's interesting what can happen when you take a step back and try something from a different perspective. Get them while they're hot!
